Hannah Waddingham Has Had A Bit Of A Change Of Heart About The Future Of Ted Lasso

Hannah Waddingham has had something of a change of heart about the future of Ted Lasso. The British actor won an Emmy for her portrayal of AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton in the hit comedy, and has made no secret of her disappointment that it doesn’t look like another season is on the cards. Last year, she even joked she was prepared to trap the show’s co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis “in a dungeon with a notepad and a pen” in a bid to get new episodes written. She’s also spoken favourably about the idea of a spin-off featuring her character. However, she appears to have eased on this stance in the past 12 months. During an upcoming interview on Sunday Today with Willie Geist, Hannah was asked about whether she’d be up for a fourth season of Ted Lasso. Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham in Ted Lasso While she said she’d “love” the opportunity to play Rebecca again, Hannah quickly added; “But, I mean, one thing’s for sure. Unless the man himself is down …

A one-shot vaccine for COVID, flu and future viruses? Researchers say it’s coming

A one-shot vaccine for COVID, flu and future viruses? Researchers say it’s coming

At the beginning of the pandemic, many people hoped that infections with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 — or vaccines against the virus — would provide durable lifetime immunity, as is the case with diseases like measles or mumps. Instead, the COVID virus is more akin to the influenza virus, which mutates constantly and confers only short-term immunity. Both COVID and the flu require new and different vaccine formulas aimed at defeating newly circulating variants of the viruses. The inevitable result of this has been, for most of us, increasing vaccine fatigue.   But what if it were possible to protect against COVID and the flu, and other unknown viruses that haven’t yet emerged, with just one shot? If that became reality, seasonal or annual boosters would be part of the past. And what if such vaccinations didn’t even require a needle? While those possibilities may sound far in the future, scientists at the University of California, Riverside, believe they could become reality relatively soon — perhaps within the next five to 10 years. As illustrated in a …

Does the future of boxing lie in humans versus robots? Possibly

Does the future of boxing lie in humans versus robots? Possibly

Boxing: thinking outside From time to time, the sport of boxing changes its rules. But for the most part, it still requires that each participant in a match be both human and alive. (Exceptions do occasionally pop up – kangaroos are the heavyweight exemplars.) Joseph Lee at Flinders University in Australia has explored a way to expand boxing’s rigid traditions. He outlines his thinking in a study in the journal Ethics and Philosophy called “Thinking outside the ring of concussive punches: Reimagining boxing“. Lee performs a thought experiment. He “imagines a fight between a human and a robot”. This imagining produces, he writes, a realisation. “A demand for robot-human boxing may occur or not. Certainly, the supply of robot boxing opponents is theoretically achievable,” he writes. “With the right programming, a contest against a future machine can be as daring as [a matador] facing up against a bull.” The main benefit, he says, is obvious: “The essential elements of boxing would be retained for humans, accompanied by an overall decrease in boxing-related brain injuries when …

Polite robots: The future of healthcare

Polite robots: The future of healthcare

Research is being conducted at KTH with humanoid robots to study politeness as a cornerstone in shaping social interactions. (Photo: KTH) Politeness plays a crucial role in human interactions, whether in everyday life or within the healthcare setting. But what about when humans interact with service robots? Sahba Zojaji, a PhD student in computer engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, delves into this question in his thesis titled “Embodying politeness in persuasive humanoid agents for small group scenarios.” According to Zojaji, human-robot relationships extend beyond mere politeness; they encompass creating interactions that feel natural, respectful, and empathetic. Achieving this involves integrating politeness into both verbal and non-verbal aspects of human-robot interactions. Zojaji has conducted several user studies using humanoid robots, which are robots designed with human-like features, to explore the role of politeness in shaping social interactions. The increasing prevalence of robots, particularly in healthcare settings, raises ethical concerns. In countries like Japan, robots are already assisting the elderly with tasks such as medication reminders and physical assistance. However, Zojaji emphasizes the need for …

One of 2022’s closest House races is primed for a rematch — with a fight over the GOP’s future first

One of 2022’s closest House races is primed for a rematch — with a fight over the GOP’s future first

The House seat representing southwest Washington state is among Republicans’ top targets to expand their slim majority in the 2024 elections — if they can nominate a candidate who can win. Former GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler represented the area for over a decade, but a year after voting to impeach then-President Donald Trump, she lost her 2022 GOP primary to Joe Kent, an Army veteran who had challenged Herrera Beutler from the right. Kent then lost the general election to Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez in a campaign that focused on Kent’s right-wing ties — even as the GOP’s Senate candidate, Tiffany Smiley, carried the same district by 8 points. (Smiley lost to the Democratic incumbent, Patty Murray.) Kent is running for the seat again this year, hoping for an opposite result, but Camas City Council Member Leslie Lewallen is hoping to take that spot on the general election ballot for herself. She is pitching herself as a Republican who is more palatable to the district’s voters. “Joe Kent had his opportunity in 2022. He …

Government sets aside £1.5m for new Future Winemakers’ Scheme

Government sets aside £1.5m for new Future Winemakers’ Scheme

Environment secretary Steve Barclay has announced the Future Winemakers’ Scheme, a £1.5 million initiative to help develop skills and job opportunities in the sector. The funding is set to target educating, training and upskilling, as businesses estimate thousands of new vineyard jobs will be created over the coming years. The news came at the annual Wines of Great Britain (WineGB) conference at Plumpton College in East Sussex – the UK’s centre of training for winemaking – along with the government’s latest steps to reform and simplify regulation for wine producers and traders. Mr Barclay said: “Around 2,300 people work in the British wine industry with a further 8,300 people employed part time – and numbers are expected to grow by 50 per cent next year. “We’re proud of what British winemakers have achieved over recent years, and we continue to work hard in partnership with the wine sector to simplify the rules and bring in new financial support.” Nicola Bates, CEO of WineGB – the trade body for English and Welsh wine – added: “The launch …
